The next morning came with the usual chirping of birds, few stray animals arguing and due to some unknown reasons, Edward was early to rise. He woke up feeling refreshed and felt like anticipating something he didn’t know. He rubbed his eyes and immediately went down to greet his parents.

His father was sitting on the sofa with the newspaper covering his face and his mother was nowhere to be seen. He went to his father and cheerfully wished him Good Morning. His father was happy to see him and greeted him back with a smile and continued reading his newspaper.

He then went out of the house to take a walk across the widely spread lawn. Their house was as big as a mansion considering his father was a very determined and well-respected government official.

Not long after he started roaming, he saw a cute little white rabbit laying on the grass. Edward was pleased to see the rabbit and quickly rushed towards it. As he was getting closer to the Bunny, he saw how it looked so fluffy and pure white, it could easily be mistaken as a cotton ball. For some reason, his anticipation since the morning, which was growing every minute, seemed to start wearing off the more he looked at the creature.

Upon kneeling beside the rabbit, he noticed that it was laying on its stomach and seemed to be having a problem breathing. He picked it up and found his hand, which was under the bunny’s stomach, was soaked red. It was not a pleasant sight to see such a cute creature struggling to keep his eyes open.

Edward sprinted inside his house to see his father still immersed in the newspaper, he quickly went towards him and stood there panting, carefully holding the fragile body of the rabbit. He started speaking breathing heavily, “Dad let’s go to the vet now please I don’t want to see a mute animal dying in my arms.” His father could sense his son’s worry with his words and tone so to keep his son kind-hearted the way he is now, he said, “Go sit in the car I will come with the keys and take this handkerchief to cover the rabbit.” With that, he gave the handkerchief in his pocket to his son and got up from his seat to get the keys.

Edward was happy to see his father immediately agreeing with him without any arguments. He took the cloth from his father and not wasting any further time he ran towards their car and sat in the passenger seat still holding the bunny cautiously.

The hospital was almost a mile away and the pitiful creature was losing its blood continuously at the same time trying his best to keep his breathing going on. Edward felt very bad for the rabbit, he desperately wanted to do anything to make the bunny come back to life hail and healthy. He was frequently asking his father to drive faster but the traffic was too much to move even 10 meters.

After a ride of about 45 minutes they finally reached the vet and stormed off inside the clinic. The hospital staff took the rabbit away as soon as they saw it bleeding so heavily that his fur was almost red leaving only a few white spots on its back.

Edward was praying to keep the bunny away from further damage while sweating heavily. His father saw his condition and assured him that the bunny will be okay by saying, “It’s going to be alright seeing that you are so worried for an unfamiliar animal. The doctors will try their best to hand it over to you in its best state.” He finished giving a sweet smile to make Edward believe him, but he seemed far away from being assured that he will be able to see the rabbit once again. So he further added, “Okay I promise when the rabbit will be back and the doctors will allow us to take it from the hospital, we will make it our pet and keep him with us till you wish. Agree?” Edward was now convinced and smiled after a long time; he was still worried but now eagerness of seeing the bunny was added to his emotions which made him a little less stressed.

He quickly looked up at his father and said, “Really father, Thankyou so much. But he will stay in my room and I will give a name to him.” His father nodded in agreement and spoke, “As you wish but now let me call your mother and tell her where we are otherwise she will start being dramatic saying we both disappeared with the wind” They both laughed in unison at the sentence and his father then left to talk to his mother through the phone.

After half an hour or so the doctor came towards Edward and his father. They both stood up and before his father could say anything Edward started speaking, “How is the bunny? Can I take it home? Is he unconscious? Is it too serious? Please doctor say something.” The vet smiled at the boy’s storm of questions and continued when his father said, “Oh dear calm down let him speak something.” “Oh yeah sorry please say something.” Edward said feeling ashamed of his silliness.

The doctor stopped smiling and began to speak looking at the sheet of papers in his hands, “The rabbit is sleeping now. If you are going to take it home, please make sure it takes a good amount of rest. As he has lost a lot of blood here are some medicines that could help in its recovery” He handed a slip of paper to them and resumed “And just for information it is a ‘he’.” He said the last of his words smiling.

His father thanked the vet and they both exchanged their visiting cards.

But Edward seemed to be thinking about something very intently with his eyebrows frowned. The vet noticed Edward’s expressions and asked, “Is there something you want to ask boy?” Edward was startled at the sudden interference in his thoughts and stuttered while saying, “Oh Actually umm, Can I ask Why was the rabbit bleeding? He finished with a look of uneasiness on his face. “A piece of metal blade was found at the side of its stomach, but it wasn’t deep so there no serious injuries.” The vet responded. “Thank you so much for the help we will take good care of the bunny” Edward’s father said, and Edward nodded at his words. The vet then smiled and excused himself when of the ward boys came and handed over the bunny, covered in a white cloth identical to the color of his fur looking like a newborn baby, to Edward who was eagerly waiting to take the bunny in his hands again.

“I think we should get going too” His father said looking at him. “Okay” Edward said and started walking towards the hospital exit staring at the bunny fondly and stroking its fur softly to not disturb him from its sleep. Edward reached their car, but his father was still inside the hospital probably paying for the service charges and buying the prescribed medications.

After just 5 minutes of waiting his father came with a small bag of medicines and antiseptic and kept the bag in the empty backseat. His father sighted how happy Edward looked with a bunny in his hands and started the car with a soft grin on his face.
